At the 30th International Conference of Agricultural Economists (ICAE) being held in Vancouver this week, an IFPRI Malawi research fellow was nominated- and was named first runner up- for the Nils Westermarck award, named after an outstanding contributor to the agricultural economics profession.
The nominee, Dennis Ochieng, is an associate research fellow at IFPRI Malawi where his research focuses on strengthening agricultural markets and institutions. He earned his PhD in Agricultural Economics from Georg-August University of Goettingen, Germany and holds a Masters in Agricultural and Applied Economics from Egerton University/University of Pretoria.
The winner of the 2018 Nils Westermarck award was announced at ICAE on August 2nd, and Ochieng was names the first runner-up with an Honorable Mention for best visual contributed paper. In the video below, Dennis shares more details about his research focus.
Ochieng was joined at this year's ICAE by IFPRI Malawi's Program Leader, Bob Baulch, who presented on ‘Change and Rigidity in Youth Employment Patterns in Malawi’ at a workshop on rural transformation hosted by the CGIAR Research Program on Policies, Institutions and Markets (PIM). At ICAE, Baulch also presented on ‘Impacts of the 2016/17 Food Insecurity Response Plan (FIRP) on Maize Prices in Malawi,’ a study conducted in partnership with Anderson Gondwe and Chiye Chafuwa of IFPRI Malawi. The full presentation is available below.
