Topic
Dairy Farming in Central Region Malawi: Navigating Between Scylla and Charybdis
Abstract
Entrepreneurship in agriculture is suggested as a mean to create sustainable livelihoods and to increase production of the agricultural sector. Even though previous research focused on the enabling environment, it predominantly focused on access to economic and natural resources. This research aimed to understand 1) how dairy smallholders recombine resources in creative ways in order to create value, and 2) how the social and material context interrelates with this. Two dairy communities were studied, each by an individual research team who visited dairy farmers throughout the day (and sometimes night) and joined them in their daily work. The most relevant insights that will be presented revolve around 1) informal institutions and witchcraft and 2) place-based organizing.
Please RSVP to the IFPRI Malawi office (ifpri-lilongwe@cgiar.org) if you plan to attend, or designate someone to attend in your place as space is limited.
