Topic
Soil Fertility Management in Sub-Saharan Africa: Status, Challenges and Future Prospects
Abstract
Sub-Saharan Africa records the biggest yield gaps worldwide. This happens due to a complex combination of factors, ranging from use of poor germplasm, low soil nutrient status, poor agronomic practices, pests and diseases to poor investments in agriculture. Concerted efforts have been made in developing and testing a number of approaches to overcome these challenges and increase crop productivity. These approaches include increased fertilizer use, improved germplasm, use of organic inputs, and conservation agriculture. Such technologies need to be combined with effective integrated pest and disease management systems and increasing water use efficiency in rainfed agriculture. While these technologies are important, resource allocation and farmer’s decision making play a significant role in adoption of appropriate practices. The sustainable intensification approach provides a win-win solution, but its widespread application will require multidisciplinary investments. These investments include research and extension, infrastructure, value chain development, and need to be backed by appropriate policies.
