First in a series of blog posts exploring IFPRI's engagement in the ‘Building Resilience and Adapting to Climate Change’ Programme in Malawi.
DFID has designed the Building Resilience and Adapting to Climate Change (BRACC) programme to strengthen the resilience of poor households in four districts in southern Malawi to current and projected weather and climate-related shocks and stresses. BRACC places a strong emphasis on monitoring and learning to generate robust evidence on what works and what does not. In this context, DFID engaged IFPRI Malawi to support the design of the impact evaluation of resilience activities, and to collect baseline data.
Correct data collection forms the basis for any good monitoring, evaluation and learning system. Data collectors need to have intimate knowledge of the questionnaire and related procedures. Therefore, IFPRI Malawi together with consultants from Imani Development conducted a four-day training workshop in Blantyre from August 5-8, 2019. 53 people (45 enumerators and 8 field supervisors) were selected from Imani’s pool and trained on the content and use of the questionnaires. They also practiced mock interviews using tablets. Enumerators will collect data electronically using tablets with ODK Collect, which greatly speeds up data consolidation and analysis. Following the workshop, the questionnaires were pretested in rural Blantyre. Enumerators will receive a refresher training prior to actual data collection, which is scheduled to start on August 26 in Balaka and Phalombe districts and will cover 224 communities and 3,136 households.
