Topic
Impact of land policies and women empowerment on dietary diversity and calorie intake in Malawi
Abstract
There is a new agenda for agriculture to not only produce enough food but also food of high nutritional quality and diversity. However, high population growth has resulted in land disputes and limited the extent to which agriculture can contribute to nutrition. Land tenure security is known to reduce land conflicts and improve farm productivity. Nonetheless, scientific evidence on the linkages between land tenure security and nutrition is very limited. This study analyses the impact of land tenure security of households and women on household dietary diversity (HDD) and calorie intake. Using nationally representative household data from Malawi, the study reveals that land tenure security has positive and statistically significant influence on household dietary diversity and calorie intake. In addition, the study finds a statistically significant influence of women’s land tenure security on household dietary diversity and a positive, but not statistically significant influence on household calorie intake. Thus, we can expect registration of customary land under the new Land Laws to significantly accelerate women empowerment and household nutrition in Malawi. This study further reveals that land tenure security as defined by formal law presents better development outcomes than informal definition based on farmers’ perceptions of tenure security.
