Topic
Exploring User-Centered counseling and Male involvement in Contraceptive Decision-Making: A Field Experiment in Urban Malawi
Abstract
We investigate some of the behavioral mechanisms that play a role in contraceptive decision-making through a field experiment in urban Malawi funded by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. Our approach is motivated by evidence in user-centered design of family planning counseling programs, which suggests that women’s stated and realized preferences for contraception are sensitive to the manner in which methods are presented and framed. To this end, we explore how targeted and framed counseling impacts a woman’s revealed preferences and decisions about contraceptive method. We test the following two hypotheses: 1) women’s stated preferences for and choices of contraception are sensitive to the number of method choices that are presented to them and the extent to which those choices are aligned with their preferred type of method; and 2) giving women the choice whether or not to involve their husbands or partners as part of the counseling process is likely to affect women’s choice of a contraceptive method and the extent to which women are able to realize their preferences for family planning. Our field experiment is conducted among a sample of 741 urban women from Lilongwe, Malawi. Our main outcomes of interest include women’s stated preferred method of contraception immediately following counseling, intention to use or not use contraception immediately following counseling.
