During a recent webinar, Bob Baulch and Rosemary Botha from IFPRI-Malawi presented the initial results of a SAM multiplier model study with Karl Pauw on the short-term economic impacts of COVID-19 in Malawi. The study considered two scenarios: (a) 2 months of social distancing (in April/May) plus external shocks over the second quarter; and (b) the proposed (but not implemented) 21-day lockdown plus social distancing and external shocks, each followed by either fast or slow lifting of restrictions during the rest of 2020.

Virtual Event – No backsliding: How can we re-orient food systems and health systems to protect nutrition and healthy diets in the context of COVID-19?
Virtual Event - Thursday, May 28, 2020 - 3:30 pm - 4:45 pm CAT. The COVID-19 pandemic — and the related economic crisis and disrupted food and health systems — will likely severely worsen all forms of malnutrition globally. In the short to medium term, micronutrient deficiencies, child wasting and stunting, and overweight and obesity are all expected to surge, stemming the tide of recent progress toward achieving the World Health Assembly’s Global Nutrition Targets 2025. This webinar will analyze the situation, focusing on anticipated impacts on maternal and child nutrition, diets, reach of nutrition interventions, and mortality. Speakers will also reflect on positive adaptations that could help rebuild stronger health, economic, and food systems, and thereby protect nutrition and health.
